Demo Day February 2013

We had a rather snowy Demo Day this month! Thanks to all who came out for the fun! We played with the ScrapBuster Table Runner! A really fun way to use up your extra 2 1/2" jelly roll strips. I grabbed some batiks and using the Binding Tool or the Creative Grids Quick Trim Ruler I cut my batik strips 8 1/2" x 2 1/2" and then mitred one end. Next I used some black batiks and cut an 8 1/2" center square and lots of 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" squares. Click on the link above to see a You Tube Video by Missouri Star Quilt Company that will take you through the entire process. Have fun using up your scraps!

Selvages are fun!

I first got intrigued by selvages upon seeing a woman wearing a great skirt made from selvages at Quilt Market! After that I started collecting my selvages & my friends started giving me  their selvages and next thing I knew...I had a mountain of selvages to work from! I started small, making a potholder or two, then Sandy Thompson wrote a great book, called Save the Selvages! Ooh, now lots of great ideas! Last Saturday was our January Demo Day at the shop & I needed something to demo! I had stumbled upon this great selvage project & quickly got to work! Click here for a tutorial on how to make this project at The Busy Beans blog. The pillow cover is about 20" x 20" and really turned out to be a fun project!

A Summer Evening with Denyse Schmidt

Philly Modern Quilt Guild  sponsored a special event this weekend featuring modern quilter, Denyse Schmidt. I was able to attend the Friday evening lecture held at the Waldorf School in Philadelphia and although I had met Denyse this past May 2012 at Quilt Market in Kansas City ,  I found this lecture so very interesting & full of things I never knew about her! She is one very talented modern quilter, who's quilting career started alittle differently than most quilters I  know. She started with making high end commisioned quilts in NYC  for several exclusive retailers and that led to her  becoming very well known many  interior decorating & architectural circles. From there her career has led  to designing  fabrics for Westminster Fibers, writing books & several quilting patterns and now lecturing as a Modern Quilter.

Denyse Schmidt, as Andrew  introduced her the room of 51 attendees!

My Ticket!

Members of the Philly Modern Quilt Quild made quilts using her fabulous fabrics.

Here is an off centered half square triangle arrangment that really caught my eye made  with Flea Market Fancy.
Ana (left)shows shows her favorite string quilt that used on of Denyse's older fabric lines.

Denyse's latest fabric line Flea Market Fancy, as well as her books & patterns are available at the shop.

Our latest Strip Club Quilt!

Our latest Strip Club Quilt, Cactus Wreath was revealed in last Saturdays Strip Club meeting at the shop. What a beautiful holiday quilt. Pattern has directions for 3 sizes wallhanging, throw & queen. It takes one of our holiday jelly rolls (precut 2 1/2" strips in reds & greens)
a few yards of Kona Snow and 2 1/2 yards for border & binding!
